In Hong Kong in the 1950s and 1960s, the commodity economy was prevalent and literature and art were highly commercialized. A writer with an unyielding artistic conscience struggled in the conflict between ideals and reality. While cooking to cure his hunger, he blamed himself and repented, sinking into an alcoholic who could not extricate himself... "The Alcoholic" was created in the early 1960s and opened in Hong Kong. The pioneer of literary modernism, it is known as "China's first stream-of-consciousness novel" and was selected as one of the "Top 100 Chinese Novels of the 20th Century" by Asia Weekly. In 2004, it triggered the filming of the movie "2046" by Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai, and in 2011 it was made into the movie "The Drunkard" by Hong Kong director Wong Kwok-siu.
