This book tells the story of the protagonist Wu Long who came to the city to fill his stomach and worked as a clerk in a rice shop. He suffered from bullying and indifference, and experienced continuous conspiracies and murderous intentions. He occupied the rice shop and gradually became rich with his ruthlessness. He became a tyrant in the small town and started to retaliate against his enemies, causing the ups and downs of life and death for many people. Wu Long was also retaliated against in the end. When he was dying, he took a train of rice and died on the way back to his hometown. Some critics called "Rice" "half history and half fable", and some called it an exquisite "rice sculpture" with Chinese traditional characteristics. In short, "Rice" is the most noteworthy novel among Su Tong's few novels. The first half of the novel was adapted into the movie "Dahong Rice Shop".

本书讲述主人翁五龙为了填饱肚子来到城市, 在米店做伙计, 饱受欺凌和漠视, 经历了接连不断的阴谋和杀机。他霸占米店, 凭着骨子里的狠劲儿渐渐发迹, 成为小城一霸, 从此展开对仇人的报复, 引发众人生死沉浮。五龙最后也被人报复, 濒死之际他带着一火车大米, 在回乡的路上死去。《米》有评论家称之为“一半是历史, 一半是寓言”, 又有称之为一部精致的具有中国传统特色的“米雕”。总之, 《米》是苏童为数不多的长篇中最值得重视的一部小说。小说的前半部分被改编为电影《大鸿米店》。
