In 2020, Elena Ferrante accepted the invitation of the Eco Lecture Hall of the University of Bologna and gave three lectures, "Pain and the Pen", "Sapphire", and "History and I", which were read aloud by others. The writer extracted key themes such as "Speaking the Original", "The Witchcraft We Need", and "The Necessary Other" from her own reading and writing history, and connected her own writing process with classic works by explaining the influence of writers such as Gertrude Stein, Ingeborg Bachmann, Lawrence Sterne, Italo Svevo, and Adriana Caballero on herself.
