This book tells the story of Fang Quan, a man who worked three odd jobs to support his family. He was guided by someone to become a master of Guangjing in a temple. He lived a life alternating between the life of a monk and the real life, and gradually fell in love with the life of chanting and meditating. Until he accepted a temple and became the abbot, Fang Quan had the ambition to expand the scale of the temple. However, to do so, he had to become a monk. This time, Fang Quan was really tempted. "Becoming a Monk" does not win by the novel structure. It describes the story of the protagonist who came from the bottom of society, who plays different roles during the day and at night, and struggles and makes choices between the temple and the secular world. Zhang Ji writes about heavy themes in a simple way, with strong contrasts, delicate and elegant writing, seemingly whispering, but able to lift heavy things with ease.
