At the 2019 Beijing Spring Art Auction, an edict sent by Emperor Kangxi to Europe in 1716 appeared. The content was to find the foreign imperial envoy he sent to Rome for many years without any news. This edict was red in color and was also known as the "red ticket" in history. Since there is no record in official history, the origin of the red ticket has always been a mystery. Why did Kangxi send Western missionaries as imperial envoys? Why send them to Europe? This book uses the red ticket as the starting point of the narrative, peeling back the cocoon, focusing on the interaction between the royal family in the early Qing Dynasty, especially the Kangxi Emperor, and the Beijing missionary group represented by Tang Ruowang and Nan Huairen, and unearthed a past story of the in-depth contact between China and the West. The Western missionaries who entered China had extensive contact with all walks of life in China, from the emperor and senior officials to the traffickers and footmen. Their interactions were intertwined with cultural collisions and personal grudges.
