Content of this book: From the late 17th century to the early 20th century, Britain was widely regarded as a hegemonic or quasi-hegemonic country in the international system. Regarding Britain's foreign strategy during this period, there has always been an "axiomatic" understanding in the academic community, that is, maintaining the "balance of power" between the major European powers or preventing the emergence of European hegemony was not only the cornerstone of Britain's foreign policy at the time, but also the international political guarantee for Britain's rise and prosperity. However, this book believes that the image of "active defender of the European balance of power" given to modern Britain is a myth that does not conform to historical reality.
