This book focuses on the means of achieving emphasis in Chinese and the semantic sources of emphasis. Based on the means of achieving emphasis at the syntactic and discourse levels, it explores the semantic sources and pragmatic mechanisms of emphasis, as well as its application in international Chinese language teaching, and discusses how to effectively integrate this universal linguistic phenomenon into the second language teaching system. The book uses the concept of emphasis to encompass three semantic categories: affirmation, negation, and anticipation/unexpectedness. It studies the pragmatic paths by which different semantic categories project and trigger the consequences of emphasis, deduces and examines the multiple semantic sources of emphasis, and attempts to establish a holistic analytical and application system for emphasis, providing new research perspectives and methods.
