This book is a novella by the Russian writer Fyodor Dostoevsky. It was Dostoevsky's first novel and his breakthrough work, marking his entry into the Russian literary scene. The book portrays the psychology of the poor, or rather, the unfortunate people of Russia, exploring the cowardice and helplessness within human nature. Lovers are forced apart by external pressures, plunging them into despair and hardship. The novel uses an epistolary format, allowing the lower classes to open their hearts and express their feelings directly. From then on, ordinary people in St. Petersburg had their own voice through Dostoevsky's writing. Lu Xun commented on "The Poor": "The world is so vast, yet so narrow; the poor love each other so much, yet cannot love each other."
