This book extends the discussions in *The Margins of Chinese Civilization* and *The Qiang Between Han and Tibetan*. The author introduces the key concept of "historical mindset," starting with stories of "marginal outliers" contrasting with the "core paradigm" narrative. Through close textual analysis, the author dissects the underlying narrative symbols of blood ties, region, and time period, as well as representational methods such as rupture, amnesia, and splicing, re-examining the "heroic ancestor stories" and "brotherly ancestor stories" circulating in the Central Plains and surrounding areas. Through an in-depth analysis of "historical mindset" and the "historical narratives" influenced by it, the author provides a new, reflective understanding of ethnic origins and identity.
