The protagonist of this book, Melso, is an ordinary office worker and a lonely, sensitive social outcast. His alienation from the world torments him every day. By chance, Melso meets Zageus, a wealthy but disabled man. Melso becomes very interested in Zageus and has a conversation with him about "existence" and "happiness." The two meticulously plan a "suicide," in which Melso inherits a large sum of Zageus's wealth. He finally escapes his current situation and begins to pursue the life he desires. However, possessing wealth does not bring Melso happiness. During his travels, he constantly contemplates questions of happiness and self-satisfaction, exploring the meaning of life.
