From the return of the last Japanese envoy to the Tang Dynasty in 839 AD to the official resumption of tribute trade between the Japanese Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu and the Ming Dynasty in 1403, official diplomacy between China and Japan was absent for nearly six centuries. During this period, the two countries were not completely without contact. As Buddhist monks and merchants established connections on the East Asian seas, a vibrant Sino-Japanese trade network flourished. Through careful research on a variety of materials, including poems, letters, images, objects, and archaeological discoveries, this book presents a vivid and dynamic picture of the East Asian seas, showing how the two groups of sea merchants and monks used each other's resources and worked closely together to promote the integration of trade networks and religious networks, jointly constructing a "religion-trade" exchange network between China and Japan, and how this trade network was built within the framework of the tribute system.
