This book is part of the "Regional Series" published by the Institute for Area Studies and Country Studies at Peking University. Marriott attempts to explore the diplomatic and military conflicts known as the Eastern Question, which involves the relations between the five major European powers (Britain, France, Prussia (later Germany), and Russia) and the Ottoman Empire, the Balkans, and the whole of Asia Minor. Marriott does not focus on a specific period, but rather attempts to trace the origins and development of the Eastern Question. Marriott initially wrote this book in 1917 with the aim of understanding the causes of World War I by exploring the Eastern Question, and ultimately focuses on the relationship between the Ottoman Empire and Europe (including the diplomatic and military challenges posed by the Ottoman Empire's existence to European states).
