This book commemorates the 80th anniversary of the Normandy landings. Four years after the British Expeditionary Force withdrew from Dunkirk, a large Allied force landed again in northwestern France. After about eight weeks of fierce fighting, the Allied forces thwarted the meticulously planned German Operation Rüttigry and launched a fierce attack on Falaise from both the north and south, forcing Field Marshal Kluge to decide to withdraw the main German forces from Normandy. By August 17, the Germans realized their resistance was crumbling and had no choice but to abandon a large number of friendly troops trapped in the Falaise pocket and flee to the north bank of the Seine overnight. Subsequently, the retreating German army could not stop and fled in disarray through France and Belgium under Allied pursuit, all the way to the Dutch border with Germany. This great defeat caused heavy losses to the German army.
