This book is a novel. In 1942, a famine struck Henan, and many people left their homes to survive. My grandmother, Zhao Xiaoqing, was one of them. Abandoned by her ex-husband, she carried her eight-month-old child and walked with her bound feet. Along with three other women who had also lost their husbands, she endured hunger, war, and the pain of losing loved ones. Led by her father, Zhao Qing'an, she left Henan and, after seven days and seven nights of travel, arrived at the south bank of the old course of the Yellow River in Dangcheng, seeking a way to make a living.
