This book tells the story of educated youth in the Great Northern Wilderness who were sent to reclaim and defend the frontier. Deputy instructor Li Xiaoyan resolutely led a vanguard team of a dozen or so people to open up the "Mangai Wasteland," known as the "Ghost Swamp." One day, the frozen "Ghost Swamp" suddenly thawed, and Li Xiaoyan, "I," "my sister" Liang Shanhu, and the blacksmith Wang Zhigang lost contact with the unit. Liang Shanhu, chasing a roe deer, accidentally fell into the "Ghost Swamp" and was buried there forever. To save the critically ill Li Xiaoyan, Wang Zhigang gave "me" his only horse, instructing "me" to take Li Xiaoyan around the "Ghost Swamp" to meet the unit. Tragically, Li Xiaoyan died along the way. When the unit arrived at the "Mangai Wasteland" following the path Wang Zhigang had scouted, they found Wang Zhigang himself had heroically sacrificed himself in a fight with a pack of wolves.
