"Siddhartha" is a novella written by German writer Hermann Hesse and first published in Germany in 1922. "Siddhartha" is set against the backdrop of Indian society and religion, and describes the protagonist Siddhartha's lifelong thinking and pursuit, from the son of a noble Brahmin to a monk, and meets the enlightened Gautama. After listening to and thinking deeply about his teachings, he still does not join; later he falls into the mundane world, indulging in sensual pleasures; and finally truly awakens in his later years. In "Siddhartha", Hesse tried to use India in the era of the Buddha as the background to unfold his questioning of the world and life. Although the protagonist Siddhartha of the novel is a practitioner of the same era as the Buddha, what Hesse wants to show to readers is the spirit of the times in Europe, especially Germany, before and after the First World War. Since its publication in 1922, this work has been very popular with readers.
