This book tells the story of Bubble, an American Shorthair kitten who is not a natural breeder (artificially bred), and Xiaozhao, a Garfield mix who is also not a natural breeder and has never married. It follows them and many other voluntarily bred domestic shorthair cats, along with their roommate, Wang Bing, a talkative but kind-hearted old man who believes in the equality of all living beings. They live a peaceful and uneventful life in Dongcun, a village on the outskirts of Beijing. The book includes approximately 30 black and white line drawings. The novel unfolds along two parallel storylines: one follows Bubble and the other cats, showing that cats have their own lives, their own paths, and their own society; the other follows Wang Bing's recollections of his youth, including his schooling, military service, and his solitary experiences in old age.
