This book is a biography of Wilm Hossenfelder, who was born in the Rhön Mountains region of Hesse, Germany, and was originally a teacher and later became a German officer, rising to the rank of captain at the end of World War II. Hossenfelder spent all of his war years in Poland, first managing a Polish prisoner-of-war camp and later running a sports school and a vocational training school for members of the Wehrmacht. World War II became a turning point in his life, and during these six years of war, he quickly transformed from a loyal supporter of Hitler to one of the Nazi government's most acrimonious and incisive critics. In the last months of 1944, he helped hide or rescue several Poles in Nazi-occupied Poland, including the pianist and composer Wladysav Szpilman.
