The story of this book takes place in a village called Dashu in the Qinba Mountains in southern Shaanxi. It is located at the junction of three provinces, with high mountains, dense forests, deep valleys, and people have been fighting against the closedness and backwardness of the mountains, wars, banditry, poverty, hunger, discrimination and bullying for generations. Ma Ying, a thirteen-year-old girl, lives with her eldest sister Ma Xiao, her third sister Ma Wei, her mother, her grandmother, and her great-grandmother in an old house in the mountains. Because there are no male children in the family, they are regarded as "extinct" by the villagers. There is a thousand-year-old tree growing in the village. The third sister Ma Wei, who lost her father, worships the tree as her godfather, and begins a legendary story with the tree father.
