During the constitutional reform movement in Rhode Island in the 1840s, radicals led by Thomas Dole bypassed Congress, established their own constitution and formed a government, which triggered an armed rebellion and political debate. Taking the political debate triggered by the Dole War in the United States as the starting point, this book examines in depth and detail the evolution of the connotations of core American political concepts such as "people", "majority rule" and "revolution", as well as the characteristics of American political culture in the early nineteenth century, revealing how two competing ideas reached a balance within the American political framework and profoundly shaped the path of political change.
