The book tells the story of 11-year-old Francie, who lives in Brooklyn, New York, with a tree of heaven in their yard. She loves to climb the fire escape and read in its shade. Every Saturday, she borrows two books from the library, hoping that if she can finish them all, from A to Z, she can claim to have read every book in the world. Although Francie has a vibrant heart, brimming with dreams, life in Brooklyn is a difficult one. She and her younger brother earn a meager income by scavenging scrap, giving half to her parents, who barely cover the rent, and saving the other half, hoping to buy herself a present for Christmas. Her parents insist on an education, hoping to escape poverty, but the hardships of life only make that hope seem more distant.
