In the first year of the Changqing era of the Tang Dynasty, Duan Chengshi moved his entire family to Chengdu. Duan Chengshi's close friend, Zheng Li, fled to Sichuan after his master was implicated in a power struggle and died. After arriving in Sichuan, Duan Chengshi, angered by his father's demand that he sever ties with Zheng Li, ran away from home and took a job as a laborer in a secondhand bookstore in the West Market. The bookstore was haunted at night, and Duan Chengshi met Hua Xieyun, a Taoist priest who came to exorcise the ghosts. Meanwhile, beggars in the West Market began to fall ill with strange diseases, and the nighttime ghostly antics at the bookstore seemed intricately linked to a murder case years ago in which a beggar was burned alive. In their search for answers, Duan Chengshi, Zheng Li, Hua Xieyun, and Qi Zhen all faced the choice of whether to turn left or right on their path of life and morality.
唐长庆元年，段成式举家迁至成都。段成式的至交好友郑离，因其师父被牵扯进皇权争斗而死，自己也身负秘密逃往蜀中。段成式入蜀后，因父亲要求他与郑离划清界限而负气离家出走，隐藏身份来到西市的一家坟典肆(旧书店)当小工。坟典肆夜里屡屡闹鬼，段成式结识了前来驱鬼的道士花撷云。同时，西市坊中的乞儿陆续得了怪病，而坟典肆半夜有人刻意的装神弄鬼，又与多年前一起乞儿被焚的杀人事件有着千丝万缕的联系。在寻找答案的过程中，无论是段成式还是郑离，花撷云或者奇真，都面临着人生和道义之路该左转还是右转的选择题。
