This book is a story picture book about the surrealist artist Marc Chagall. Chagall was born in 1887 in a Jewish family in Vitebsk, Belarus. He was fascinated by the view through the window since he was a child. He often painted windows, some open, some closed, some neat and square, some twisted and curved, some full of comfortable light, and some dark and sad. He placed relatives, friends, strangers, imaginary characters and himself in front of the window. In his sixties, he continued to study and became fascinated with making stained glass windows. In the following years, he designed and completed many famous windows, including the Peace Window at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
