This book mainly describes the diplomatic activities of the United States from Benjamin Franklin in the founding period to the end of the Cold War in the early 1990s, involving many presidents and secretaries of state who have important positions or influences in the history of the United States for more than 200 years, such as Jefferson, Adams, Lincoln, Roosevelt, Truman, Wilson, Kennedy, Nixon, Kissinger, Reagan, etc. The book reviews the decision-makers, participants and major events of these American foreign policies, and sorts out the five traditions in the "process of the United States' engagement with the world": the emphasis on North America, the emphasis on international trade freedom, the alliance relationship beyond traditional realist politics, the reliance on public and congressional support, and the imagination that the United States has a grand mission.
