This book presents the culmination of nearly two decades of research by two economists on global poverty. To understand why poverty occurs and what specific problems it leads to, thus trapping the poor in a vicious cycle of poverty, the authors delved into the lives of the poor across five continents, investigating 18 countries and regions with the highest concentrations of poverty. They explored the true roots of poverty from multiple perspectives, including daily life, education, health, entrepreneurship, aid, government, and NGOs. The book also reflects on some popular views about poverty, such as the idea that more aid increases the poor's dependence and that external aid is ineffective.
