This book tells the story: When he was a boy, Chu Pingyang and his friends heard an illiterate old lady chanting over and over again alone inside a crumbling leaning church by the canal: Jerusalem. Chu Pingyang always thought that the Chinese pronunciation of this word was so beautiful and mysterious that he could not forget it for many years. It was not until the eve of his Ph.D. graduation that he was questioned by a Jewish professor from Israel that he discovered that his yearning for Jerusalem not only stemmed from the temptation of Chinese pronunciation, but also from the knot of confession and atonement that had been hidden in his heart for many years.
