This book is a prose autobiography written by Japanese cultural master Shuichi Kato, and consists of two parts. The first half describes the author's life from childhood to 1945 when Japan was defeated. The second half is from 1945 when Japan was defeated to the 1960s when the new Japan-US Security Treaty was signed. The two works are coherent and are not only excellent literary works that record the growth process of this "intellectual giant", but also a precious historical archive that records Japan's ill-fated fate for half a century. The author once wrote in the postscript that he wrote this book not just to reminisce about the past, but to record his experience as an "average Japanese".
