My name is Zha Shiyi Re: Zha is my family name, Shiyi is the season of my birth, and Re is a type of grass. Born in 1990, I am a member of the Yi ethnic group, and I grew up in a remote mountain village in Yunnan. This book records my growth, attempts to outline my life trajectory over the past thirty-four years, and also tries to leave some life records for my female relatives and neighbors. In my early years, the village was poor, and life was inevitably difficult and arduous, but it was not lacking in natural romance: flowers, trees, sunshine, streams, mountains, cats, dogs, cattle, horses, birds, playmates... The flowing rural scenery accompanied my childhood, weaving old dreams that softened my heart. The changes in the private lives of two generations of Yi rural women—my mother, my sister, my female relatives and neighbors—have presented a lagging but vibrant landscape with social development. As someone born in 1990, my growth, education, employment, and migration have been accompanied by the acceleration of the country's urbanization process, as well as the loss of rural memories and borderland experiences. I hope that through my writing, I can preserve a record of the old people and customs of the village.
