This book is a collection of novellas by Andrei Platonov, a master of Russian literature, including four works: The Primeval Sea, Potutan River, The Elusive Man, and Epifan Sluice. Among them, the novel of the same name, The Primeval Sea, was a work that Platonov failed to publish during his lifetime. The novel tells the story of the protagonist, Nikolai Vermo, a high-voltage engineer, who goes deep into the grasslands of southeastern Russia and works hard at a state-owned livestock farm, hoping to use arc technology to drill the underground primeval sea and use groundwater to turn the arid grassland into fertile land suitable for animal husbandry. The protagonist and his companions intend to use technology to change the laws of nature and transform the universe, thereby realizing the happiness of all mankind.
