Sandalwood Punishment/檀香刑

This book recreates a grassroots anti-colonial struggle that took place on the Shandong Peninsula in the late Qing Dynasty. Sun Bing, a folk artist who led this struggle, was ultimately subjected to "sandalwood torture." Using the "torture" as its main theme, the work showcases many dramatic events during the decline of Chinese dynastic politics, including the Hundred Days' Reform, the Boxer Rebellion, and the plundering by foreign colonial powers.
