This book tells the story of 1937, when the Battle of Shanghai shattered the tranquility of Jiangnan, sweeping through the powerful families of Chen, Lin, and Zhong along the Qiantang River. Chen Jianfeng, a graduate of the Whampoa Military Academy, falls in love with Ye Ziyan, a progressive female student, but their relationship is thwarted by foreign invasion. The Japanese seize a large portion of the Chen family's goods, leading to Chen's father's tragic death, while the Ye family is destroyed in Japanese bombing raids. Meanwhile, Chen Jianfeng's elder brother, Chen Qifeng, works day and night with bridge expert Mao Yisheng amidst the flames of war to reopen the Qiantang River Bridge.
