This book tells the story of a Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army squad that was defeated in battle in 1938 and lost contact with the main force and the party organization. Platoon leader Lao Shandong and several close comrades including Tang Deyuan, Gao Yunhu, Wan Fuqing, Tian Xiaogui, and Huaer survived, but had to hide and seek refuge separately. They had made a vow before the war: no matter when and where, even if only one person was left alive, they would find the unit and the party organization, and fight to the death until the Japanese invaders were completely expelled from China. After experiencing countless hardships and life-and-death tests, the soldiers finally reunited and, under the guidance of the party organization, went to the Soviet Union to join other anti-Japanese forces and became part of the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army Teaching Brigade.
