This book tells the story of Lin Fang, a university teacher, who brings her five-year-old daughter, Bailu, to work in the production team of Jinniufang Village in the eastern suburbs of Beijing. Bailu befriends several other children, including Liushuya. Upon graduating from high school, Bailu goes abroad, while Liushuya joins the army. As the suburbs of Beijing undergo economic development, the environment is damaged. Several years later, the children return to Jinniufang and work together with the villagers to manage the river and rebuild their hometown.
