This book tells the story of a boy born in Tennessee on the night of the Leonid meteor shower in 1833. At the age of 14, he ran away from home, traveling through fields, villages, farms, and towns, eventually arriving in Nacodoch, Texas. He lived without thinking, encountering all sorts of people. He drank, stole, committed arson, and fought, eventually joining the Glenton gang and traveling with Holden, Glenton, and others across the US-Mexico border. By 1878, the infamous Glenton gang had long since collapsed, and the former boy was now a 45-year-old middle-aged man. He wandered alone between the wilderness and towns, with no origin and no destination. In a small town bar, he encountered his former companion, Judge Holden, dancing naked and nimbly on the dance floor.
