"I Dreamed a Dream in Chinese" is a non-fiction work written in Chinese by the young Italian writer Alex about his six-year journey in China. In 2016, Alex, a 23-year-old graduate, saw no way out in aging Italy and decided to go to China, a rising hotbed of film production. He came to the Beijing Film Academy to study directing, starred in melon seeds and mobile phone commercials, played the 46th extra in a mainstream war film, recorded movie podcasts in poor Mandarin, worked as a translator for documentaries, and also participated in underground independent film production. In the past six years, Alex learned Chinese from scratch, wrote a diary on Douban, talked with different people in big cities and small towns, and witnessed the vastness of China in every small encounter: in Beijing, he learned how to cut vegetables from the dormitory aunt; when shooting commercials in Guangzhou, he had morning tea before work and drank black tea after filming; in Shanghai, he used the living room as a writing salon to create a temporary home; in rural Sichuan, he used white wine as heating to cross the barriers of winter and dialect. Alex uses calm yet humorous words to record his observations and daily life in China, write about his personal experiences and changes in the times in recent years, and also write about the emotions of the times and real dilemmas faced by young people all over the world: in an era of disorder and loneliness, have the courage to embrace the uncertainty of life, stay mobile, yearn for freedom, cross barriers, and connect with people.
