This book presents the causes and consequences of a clan fight in the form of two interwoven narrative lines. A young man eager to go to sea and a reckless and dangerous coming-of-age ceremony constitute the main line of the story, interspersed with personal stories of many interviewees told in Wenzhou Cangnan dialect. The first line tells the story of the three brothers of the Chen family going to sea in a classical narrative style, which directly led to the outbreak of resentment between the two villages; the second line allows characters of various professions and ages to appear in turn, laying out the era and social background of the novel with group portraits.
