The seven villages of Jiecha meander along the Wengu River. People live by the water, and all conflicts arise from the water. A severe flood in 1975 forced "my grandfather" to move his family to Quli Village. Not long after, "my grandfather" was beaten to death in a paddy field in broad daylight. "My grandmother" fell ill and died soon after. The seeds of hatred were sown. "My father" ran away from Jiecha and reclaimed land on the wasteland at the edge of the basin, and built "Xiaohu Village". Water irrigates the farmland of the mountain people and also transports wood for them. "My father" became the raft leader.
