"I Am Not Your Creation" is a biographical novel written by the famous Mexican writer Elena Poniatowska based on the famous surrealist painter Leonora Carrington. Leonora was born into a family of industrial giants, but she had a rich imagination and a strange personality since childhood. She was rebellious and unruly in her adolescence. Her love affair with the painter Max Ernst was extremely turbulent. It was Ernst who brought her into the world of surrealism, where she rubbed shoulders with Dali, Duchamp, Miró, Breton and Picasso. During World War II, Ernst was sent to a concentration camp, and Carrington suffered a mental breakdown and was imprisoned in a mental hospital in Spain. After escaping by chance, she moved to New York and achieved success with the funding of Peggy Guggenheim. Eventually, she left Europe with the help of her first husband Renato and went to Mexico. Here, she started a new life. She became independent from the influence of Max Ernst, adapted to the different culture of Mexico, formed a new circle of friends, and continued to create with new inspiration. The author Poniatowska has a similar life experience to Leonora and has close exchanges with her. Based on a large amount of interview materials and common experiences, Poniatowska outlines for us the life of a vivid and rebellious female artist.
