This book is an autobiographical novel by Gregory David Roberts. The protagonist Limbaba went from being the youngest lecturer in philosophy and literature at the university to a serious criminal. Later, he escaped from an Australian prison and smuggled to Mumbai, disappearing from the face of the earth. With a fake name, a fake passport and a past that could not be told, Limbaba entered the lower class of Mumbai under the guidance of an Indian tour guide, and started a new journey of life in this city with beggars, ascetics, actors, soldiers and fugitives from all over the world. He became the first white person to live in the slums, he fell in love with Mumbai, and learned to communicate with the locals in Hindi and Bengali; he got the name "Shantaran" from an old woman.
