During the Kaiyuan era of the Tang Dynasty, strange and supernatural events occurred frequently in Chang'an. Emperor Li Longji dispatched Yuan Cantian, the head of the Tongxuan Academy, to investigate, while also guarding against his aunt, Princess Taiping, using the situation to cultivate her power. Yuan Cantian and his disciples investigated and discovered that two soldiers attempting to desert were involved in the supernatural events, one of whom, Zhao Wu, was missing. Yuchi Qinglin, a notorious playboy known as the "Brocade-Clad Asura" in Chang'an, had been imprisoned for a year the previous year for standing up for his friend Zhao Wu. With his release date approaching, Yuchi Qinglin became embroiled in strange events in prison, possessed by a divine lion. Upon his release, Yuchi Qinglin returned home and was finally reunited with his family and fiancée, Yueyao. He also learned that his friend Zhao Wu was hiding in his home, supposedly having encountered strange occurrences. Because of the strange events in prison, Princess Taiping shifted her accusations to Yuchi Qinglin.
