Modern credit, developed during the Financial Revolution of 1620-1720, laid the foundation for Britain's political, military, and economic domination in the 18th century and facilitated the First Industrial Revolution. However, this new credit system brought a lot of losses. It was not only unstable and prone to accidents, but also dependent on trust, public opinion, and ultimately on violence. The author of this book reconstructs the ideological background that gave birth to the Financial Revolution. He traces how the discourse on credit evolved and responds to the Glorious Revolution, the Scientific Revolution, the establishment of the Bank of England, and so on. The author guides us to understand how contemporary people view the instability of credit and the role of violence-war, slavery, and execution-in maintaining trust.
