This book is an autobiographical historical work written or narrated by Gandhi himself (Gandhi wrote 30 chapters, and the last 20 chapters were narrated by Gandhi and recorded by his assistant). It mainly tells how Gandhi fought against the South African colonists for the legitimate rights and interests of Indian expatriates during his 21 years in South Africa, and describes how Gandhi transformed from a lawyer to a politician who gradually emerged. During this period, Gandhi gradually explored and developed political struggle methods and basic social ideas with personal characteristics.
