This book tells the story of a mission in the mountainous area of central Shandong in 1943. Squad Leader Yue of the Third Squad of a company of the Eighth Route Army was assigned to escort a Japanese language professor to a military sub-district at night with 15-year-old Shitou (Shi Xinsheng), Sun Kangzhan, and Zhou Shengli. On their way back from their mission, they encountered Japanese and puppet troops. Squad Leader Yue ordered Shitou to return to the company alone to report. On the way, Shitou stumbled upon an iron mine being exploited by Japanese soldiers. Working in cunning collaboration with a villager named He Daye, Shitou successfully blew up the mine and rescued the captured miners.
