This book is the famous work of Alfred Thayer Mahan, a U.S. naval historian and naval strategic theorist, on the theory of sea power. It is the first part of the trilogy of sea power theory and the foundation of Mahan's theory of sea power. In this book, he advocated that we should have and use superior navy and other maritime forces to establish control over the ocean and achieve national strategic goals. He attributed products, shipping and colonies to the three major links of sea power, and proposed six conditions that affect sea power, namely: geographical location, natural structure, territorial scope, population, national characteristics, and government characteristics and policies. He revealed the influence of sea power on historical development by telling the history of Europe and America, especially the history of maritime wars.
