This book was first published in the monthly magazine "Russian Messenger" in 1866. It is Dostoevsky's second novel after returning from ten years of exile in Siberia. Raskolnikov, a poor college student from St. Petersburg, went to school alone, but was tired of making a living. Influenced by the social ideas popular among young people at that time, he killed the usurious pawnbroker and her innocent sister in a state of mental disorder, and then fell into a long journey of repentance and redemption. The novel is based on this criminal case and touches the "deepest part of life" in Russia in the 1860s. The life full of suffering and the painful and noble thoughts form the "polyphony" of many voices in the novel, facing the eternal issues in human society such as life and death, good and evil, God and the devil.
