This book, written in the first person, recounts the life of the late Swiss woman, Dolores Werner. Born in Guangzhou, China in 1936, Dolores spent her childhood in Hong Kong and Chongqing, experiencing China's War of Resistance against Japan. After the war, she studied in Shanghai, witnessed its liberation, and then went to Hong Kong for further studies, remaining in China until 1955. Dolores spent her first twenty years in China, traveling to Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Shipu, Haiyou, Tiantai, Yongkang, Hekou, Ningtu, Ji'an, Hengyang, Guilin, Liuzhou, Guiyang, and Chongqing. The book not only tells Dolores Werner's personal story but also recounts her family's experiences in China: her maternal grandfather, Charles Berger, an engineer, came to China in 1902.
