Jean Rouch is one of the world's most prolific masters of ethnographic filmmaking, yet only five of his more than one hundred films reached North America; he was a pioneer in the study of African societies, but his ethnographic works are little known. Despite his immense contributions to both anthropology and film, his reputation remains highly controversial. Existing commentary on Rouch is far from comprehensive, mostly consisting of reflections that are detached from reality.
