Two centuries have passed since the promulgation of the Monroe Doctrine in 1823, and over a century since US President Wilson delivered his address to Congress in 1917. However, domestic academic understanding of US diplomacy has either lingered on the level of artifacts such as policies and institutions, or has been confined to interpreting and explaining immediate or sporadic events, neglecting to consider the deeper, longer-term factors at play behind major historical events in US foreign relations, such as the shifting philosophical foundations and shifting intellectual tendencies. This book focuses on core categories of US foreign relations, such as the Monroe Doctrine and the Wilson Doctrine, and examines the ideological content and conceptual structure embedded in or embodied in the original texts. This book, while small, offers a valuable intellectual guidepost for analysing and analyzing the ideological context and ethical character of the evolution of the American liberal empire, and for considering ultimate questions such as humanity's political predicament and historical destiny in the 21st century.
