This book tells the coming-of-age story of Lin Nian, a lonely girl, and Jiang Huai, a rebellious teenager. After graduating from high school, Lin Nian is forced by financial difficulties to live in an old, dilapidated tenement building, enduring the unreasonable behavior of some neighbors and struggling to pay rent. One rainy day, Lin Nian goes out and happens to encounter Jiang Huai, who has run away from home. Lin Nian takes Jiang Huai in and becomes a sub-landlord, collecting rent from him and then paying the landlord. Jiang Huai sees Lin Nian's plight but doesn't take it to heart. In this tenement building, they are like small animals trapped in the rain, licking each other's wounds and baring their fangs. In the damp, rainy summer, the two gradually understand each other better. However, due to a misunderstanding, they separate. Years later, Lin Nian is busy working on a film set and meets Jiang Huai again. The two reconcile and the misunderstanding is resolved.
