This book uses the life of Jiang Jie, a poet of the Southern Song Dynasty, as its framework, weaving his poems into a narrative of fleeting moments: red cherries and green banana leaves. Amidst a broken land, a lone boat adrift, a white gull asks, "Where does my heart belong?" Ultimately, all people face loneliness. When we cross time and space to meet Jiang Jie, we are struck by the realization that our own hearts are often questioned by that white gull: "Is it the body that remains? Is it the heart?" The author raises a cup of wine, a toast to his independent spirit, to the solitary figure listening to the rain beneath the monk's hut, and to our gentle encounter through words. Like the poet Jiang Jie, the author is a native of Yixing. Her exploration of Jiang Jie captures his unique soul and character holistically, while also grounding herself in the culture and traditions of his homeland.
